Fierce Winds Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to stay indoors as powerful gusts lash the country.

Powerful winds hitting velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 households without power and compelled agencies to halt more than 100 flights, according to regional news sources.

The winds are affecting the whole South Island and southern parts of the northern region, per the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have issued uncommon high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in central regions such as Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been encouraged to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for more utility disruptions.

Broad Destruction and Crisis Response

The electricity loss appears to be affecting residences mainly in the southern region, though agencies say that energy was being restored progressively.

Regional news have stated that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, and power lines and trees have been toppled by the gusts.

Within the capital, a person was fatally injured after being hit by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was pushed toward approaching vehicles on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services to and from the city have been cancelled because of the gusts, whereas some roads and libraries are shut down.

At the same time authorities in Canterbury have issued a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.

Labor Protests During Harsh Conditions

The powerful gales on today come as many of school staff, physicians and civil servants are engaged in what has been called a "major walkout", calling for better pay and working conditions.

Yet the extreme weather has pressured them to alter certain arrangements, with various open-air gatherings relocated inside or abandoned.

Similar gusts are impacting the nearby nation, causing a heatwave to the remote areas.

Agencies have declared burning restrictions for fear of forest fires.
