No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
