Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
